Jimbo & Rex

Firstly I would like to apologise for my absent over the past week. I am currently really busy with my Uni work since we're coming towards the end of the semester and for the next 2-3 weeks I will not be uploading as regularly as I have been in the past. I will however maintain my promise of one post per week.

Back to business. Last Thursday Tina and I went to Jimbo & Rex in Crown Casino Complex to try the Footy Meal Deal menu.

Jimbo & Rex in Crown Casino Complex
I was impressed with the layout and interior design of the restaurant, then again it is to be expected. This is Crown we're talking about. The restaurant have a really nice homy feel with modern country style decorations. Definitely a kids friendly place and perfect for the whole family. (Except the bar)

One thing I don't like about the interior of the restaurant is the building foundation right in the centre of the restaurant. They did a good job at blending it in with the rest of the but it still visually shrink the spacious room.

The Bar

Jimbo & Rex have a decent menu with a number of options ranging from seafood to pizzas, pastas to sandwiches and steak. Sadly the drinks and alcohol menu is actually longer than the savoury menu. Do watch out for the hefty bill that comes with every dish on Jimbo & Rex menu.

Then again Tina and I didn't go for their normal menu. We wanted to try the Footy Meal Deals which is currently on offer at Crown. Three different restaurants within crown is offering this deal including Cotta, Emporio della Pasta and Jimbo & Rex. The deal offer a choice of 220g porterhouse steak, burger or chicken Pamigiana serve with french fries and a drink (Calton Draught or Coca-Cola). All this is only for $9.90 per serve. Seriously, its rare to find a meal in Crown for less than $10 and I'm not talking about the food court either.

Out of the available options, the porterhouse steak appeal to me the most. For me the choice was clear. My initial thought was 'wow, the steak is small'. Once I got over the size of the steak I started to rationalise my thoughts. Firstly, the steak is 220g, not the usual 360-400g steak, so obviously it's going to be small. There were a number of sauce option for the steak and I settled with red wine sauce. The steak was delicious. The inside was medium rare just as I ordered. It was tender and moist and went perfectly wit the red wine sauce. The salad on the other hand was a disappointment. What you get is a handful of mixed salad and a couple of slices of tomato wedge. As for the french fries, Tina described it as 'dehydrated' and 'overcooked' and I feel there's no better words to describe it. Then again this dish cost only $9.90. For this price the dish is definitely worth the money.

As for Tina, she ordered the burger. This burger is basically a BLT hamburger with butter and mayo and the bacon removed. According to Tina this was the biggest burger she ever had. As for me, I've had bigger. The meat patty was definitely the highlight of the dish. Tina enjoyed her burger especially the meat which she described as 'juicy and moist'.

Every meal comes with a drink. I had a glass of coke while Tina ordered some lemonade. It is possible to change your drink to any other soft drinks available but I wasn't aware of this at the time. If you don't want soft drinks or Carlton Draught, water will be available.

Overall, it was a great experience. The salad and the chips could have been better but for the price I payed it's hard to complain. The service was quick. Our food were served in less than 10 minutes after ordering. One thing I'm not too happy about was their customer service. They were not as attentive as I expect from a classy restaurant. They were not rude but they wasn't too polite either.

The Foot Meal Deals is available from 12 noon to 6pm everyday. The offer is valid till June 2nd.
