Straits of Malacca Malaysian Cuisine

After a tiring day at Luna Park and St Kilda beach, my family and I head towards Glen Waverley with hungry stomachs for dinner. We decided to eat at Straits of Malacca since my mum wanted to try Malaysian food.

The front of Straits of Malacca in Glen Waverley

No photos of the menu this time (I forgot take it, sorry) but there were a wide range of options available. There's rice, fried noodle, noodle soup, entree, salad, dried noodle, soup, etc. The interior is simple yet sophisticated and is keep beautifully clean. The restaurant is divided into 2 sides and the pictures below is showing only one of the sides.

We ordered 7 dishes altogether ranging from rice to noodle soups. They were very generous with their portion as each dish was enough to feed two hungry people. We cleaned almost all of the dishes and my dad who claimed that he was hungry ate the most. The food were very affordable as each dish start at about $10 to mid tens. There were a few dish ranging in the late tens and early twenties but very few. For the proportion we were receiving it was definite well worth the money. On top of that the food was delicious.

My dish was one of the cheapest of the seven costing at $9.90. I ordered number 33 Malaysian Choices Combination Hor Fun which is stir fried large rice noodle and vermicelli with a type of Chinese cabbage and a range of meat in a slimy soup. Don't take it the wrong way but that's the best I can describe it. It doesn't have a particular flavour but rather a mixture of sweet and salty. You can definitely taste the different flavours but it's very subtle. I quite like the dish actually. I've tried something similar to this before at Papa Rich (I'll review PappaRich another day), another Malaysian restaurant, but the name slips my mind.

Malaysian Combination Hor Fun
Kuala Lumpur Style Horkkien Mee was another dish we ordered. It looks a little like a plate of worms but trust me it's not. They're noodles, thick ones, but smaller than Japanese udon noodles. I can't describe the taste to you because I only had a bite but my sister did enjoy it.

We also ordered Curry Laska. I can't really fault this dish except that the curry becomes slightly overwhelming when it's cold. On the other hand it was delicious while it was hot. The curry was good and the noodles were nice and soft (unlike Warra Warra noodles). It's definitely worth a try but if you do order this make sure to finish it quick before it gets cold or else you won't finish it at all.

Curry Laska
Combination Deep Fried Noodle was a bit of a disappointment. The dish is very average, it looks average and it tastes average. If I'm to break the dish into each of it's components then it would be deep fried egg noodles with beef and vegetables stir fry. As I said, this dish is a disappointment and I wouldn't recommend it.

Combination Deep Fried Noodle
Nasi Pattaya and Thai Fish Fillet was delicious and definitely one of the best of the seven. Within this dish we have deep fried fish fillets with fresh vegetables drizzled with sweet and sour sauce. The fillets are a little plain if you have it by itself but the flavour changes dramatically with sauce. This dish wouldn't taste as good without the sauce. On the side we have deep fried Asian spring rolls. That yellow ball drizzled in sweet and sour sauce is actually rice wrapped in egg omelette. When the egg omelette was cracked open, we expected to find streamed white rice inside but boy we were wrong. Inside is actually curry fried rice, Malaysian style of course, and it taste wonderful. The curry flavour wasn't too powering but it was definitely there. The fried rice was good enough to have by itself and nothing else.

Curry Fried Rice wrapped within an Egg Omelette
Malacca Style Curry Fish with Rice was the first dish to arrive. When I first lay eyes on this dish I was like 'WOW! That is big'. The plate was enormous. The size of this serving could easily feed two people. In this dish you literately get a whole fish all to your self with a huge bowl of rice and some salad. The highlight of this dish is the fish and the most shocking thing about this dish would also be the fish. The fish was filleted and sliced into long bite size pieces and and deep fried till crispy on the outside. It was then rearranged on the plate with vegetable curry poured over the top. The fish and curry was nice and it worked well together but it wasn't the best. My mum loved this dish at first but over time she find the curry was too overwhelming and you'll simply feel that you've had enough. Now here comes the shocking part, when I said you get the WHOLE fish I meant it quite literately. The head, tail and the spine were deep fried and were positioned on the plate at decorations. If you look very carefully at the photos below, you'll find the head is the piece at the very front of the first photo and the tail can be seen in the second while the spine is buried underneath the pile of fillet goodness. If you decide to order this dish then make sure you have someone else there with you to finish it. The serving size alone makes it hard to finish it.

Malacca Style Curry Fish with Rice
Western Style Fish with Rice is basically the same thing as Malacca Style Curry Fish with Rice. The difference? Malacca Style Curry Fish have curry on top while Western Style Fish doesn't. Under the fillets in Western Style Fish you'll find some lettuce and herbs (basil I think) while on the top ... well, I don't know what it is. All I know is that it's thin, crispy, chilli and very addictive. It looks a little like deep fried corn hair but it's definitely not corn hair. I absolutely love that thing and just couldn't get enough of it. The entire plate was drizzled in a sweet yellow sauce which I couldn't remember what it was.

Western Style Fish with Rice
We had a wonderful time at Straits on Malacca. The food was delicious and the service was great. As for the price, it was cheap and very affordable especially for the kind of serving size they were giving. To put it into perspective, Malacca Style Curry Fish with Rice and Western Style Fish with Rice is only $12.80 each. It's hard to find another place that serves this kind of portion with basically a whole fish at this price range and still have it taste really good. The service was really quick. The food arrived one after another about 10 minutes after we ordered. I don't know whether their service is always this fast or it was because we were there early (around quarter past 5PM) and peek hour is yet to start. Either way Straits of Malacca, you have yourself another group of satisfying customers and expect to see us there again in the future.
